In the heart of Kyiv, a new interpretation of one of the most mysterious symbols of Ukrainian philosophy is born — the Skovoroda Fountain. This is not just a fountain. It’s a modern reflection on the eternal questions of life’s meaning, purpose, and inner freedom — the very questions posed by Hryhoriy Skovoroda, the great thinker whose ideas remain relevant today.

Inspiration

The original sketch of the fountain, created by Skovoroda himself, became the starting point for our work. At its center lies a large bowl, sending twelve streams of water outward, each filling a separate vessel placed around it. This visual metaphor embodies a world where each person receives their own share, their own path, their own destiny — yet all are nourished by the same source.

Symbols

Twelve bowls — twelve paths, twelve months, twelve apostles, twelve opportunities. Water represents wisdom, knowledge, and truth, flowing from the source to the people. Each vessel fills according to its capacity, reminding us of Skovoroda’s core belief: equality lies not in quantity, but in the fullness within each soul.

Art and Technology

We preserved the historical image while adding contemporary meaning. Now, the fountain comes to life when people approach it. Around the fountain, twelve interactive buttons are embedded into the pavement. As visitors step on each button, they activate a water jet and the lighting of one vessel. The more people participate, the more fully the fountain reveals itself. This symbolizes interaction — the fountain’s meaning only unfolds through human engagement.

Materials and Light

All elements are crafted from bronze, covered with a special golden paint. Bronze symbolizes eternity, gold reflects the value of timeless ideas. In the evening, the fountain comes alive with soft lighting, turning each stream into a luminous symbol. Light is not merely decoration — it’s a metaphor for truth, illuminating the path for those who seek answers.

Emotions and Meaning

For children, it’s a magical game where water responds to their steps. For adults, it’s a philosophical story prompting reflection on life, choices, and purpose.

This fountain is more than an art object. It’s a dialogue across generations. It’s a bridge between the 18th century, when Skovoroda conceived his fountain, and the 21st century, where his ideas have found new life through water, light, and bronze.
