About The Project

“Light of the Centuries” is a monumental interactive light-and-sound installation devoted to the history of the people who lived on the territory of modern Kazakhstan across twenty centuries. The project presents history not as a static chain of dates and facts, but as a continuous, living process expressed through light, space, and human interaction with architecture.

The installation forms an open public environment where the past becomes perceptible and history transforms into an individual, emotional experience.

Architecture Of Time

The spatial concept is built around 20 vertical light columns, each symbolizing one century. Fabricated from white light-diffusing polycarbonate, the columns emit a soft, dynamic glow that creates depth and a sense of presence. Golden-finished metal rings of varying diameters and widths encircle each column, acting as visual layers of time. These rings embody the intensity of life, the accumulation of experience, and the memory of generations.

The height of every column corresponds directly to the population size of its century, creating a visually intuitive landscape of time that can be read at a glance.

The composition avoids a linear pathway. Instead, the space is freely organized, enabling visitors to determine their own route and establish a personal dialogue with different eras.

People And Names

Each column provides concise information about its century: historical period, population size, average life expectancy, defining characteristics of the era, and the lifestyle of its people. Particular emphasis is placed on the names of remarkable individuals—thinkers, scholars, poets, rulers, and cultural and social figures—whose contributions shaped the region’s development.

The installation highlights a fundamental idea: history is not driven by abstract forces, but by real people and their lives.

Interactivity And Dialogue With An Era

“Light of the Centuries” reacts to touch. When a visitor makes contact, a distinct light scenario and sound response are triggered within the column, creating the sensation of a direct dialogue between a person and a specific era.

Each interaction is singular. Light and sound shift dynamically, as though the column is narrating its story through its own expressive language. The surrounding space fills with a multilayered soundscape reflecting the rhythm, emotional tone, and character of the century.

Here, history is not simply observed—it is experienced.

Why Interactivity Is Fundamental

The interactive format is intentional. It transforms the visitor from a passive observer into an active participant in history. Physical touch generates an emotional connection with the past, bridging generations through personal engagement. This method renders history tangible, embodied, and memorable—something that cannot be fully communicated through a book, a screen, or a lecture.

A New Point Of Attraction And A Cultural Symbol

“Light of the Centuries” is envisioned as a new point of attraction for residents and international visitors alike. It becomes a space for meetings, walks, reflection, and dialogue, while serving as a strong visual and cultural landmark within the urban landscape.

Designed for long-term integration into the city, the installation is expected to welcome millions of visitors and inspire extensive photo and video sharing on social media, contributing to a distinctive and recognizable image of the country worldwide.

Educational Mission

The installation operates as a contemporary educational platform. Schoolchildren and students can engage not only with historical facts but also with the magnitude of time itself, gaining insight into the value of human life and the responsibility toward future generations.

The project cultivates respect for history, ancestral memory, and cultural heritage.

Mobile Application — History In Your Phone

A dedicated mobile application extends the physical installation into a digital environment. Through the app, users will be able to:

– access expanded information about each century;
– explore key events, figures, and cultural contexts;
– deepen their understanding of history through texts, audio materials, and visual content.

Available in multiple languages, the application ensures accessibility and engagement for an international audience.

The Core Idea

“Light of the Centuries” is the history of people conveyed through light. It is a space where each century becomes a living interlocutor, and every visitor becomes part of the greater history of their country.
