ABOUT THE PROJECT

“Northern Lights” is a contemporary winter interactive light installation designed as a smooth, wave-like composition of vertical polycarbonate tubes. The object is installed directly on the ground surface and creates an expressive luminous landscape that visitors can walk through, view from different angles, and interact with through touch.

The installation is inspired by the natural phenomenon of the aurora borealis. Soft transitions of blue, turquoise, white, violet, and pink light create the sensation of a living stream of light. In its calm mode, the object functions as a continuous light show: the light slowly moves through the tubes, imitating the movement of the polar sky.

MAIN IDEA

The installation transforms an urban space into an interactive winter art object.

In its standard mode, “Northern Lights” glows with smooth color transitions reminiscent of a real aurora. Light waves travel through the entire composition, creating the impression that the northern lights are moving inside the tubes.

When a person touches one of the tubes, the object reacts instantly: a color impulse appears at the point of contact. The light spreads from the hand upward, downward, and into the neighboring zones, as if the visitor has personally launched a wave of northern lights.

As a result, the object becomes not just a decorative element, but a living interactive environment that responds to the actions of visitors.

VISUAL DESIGN

The composition consists of vertical light tubes of different heights, arranged along a smooth wave-like trajectory. The varying height of the elements forms the silhouette of an icy light wave.

The tubes are made of matte light-diffusing polycarbonate, which makes the internal light appear soft, volumetric, and evenly distributed. During the day, the object retains a clean winter image of a translucent ice-like structure, while in the evening and at night it turns into a bright visual accent within the space.

A sculptural frame made of AISI 304 stainless steel runs along the lower contour. It emphasizes the wave shape, protects the structure, and gives the object a modern premium appearance.

The polished or satin-finished metal surface reflects the light from the tubes, snow, and surrounding architecture, enhancing the visual effect of the installation.

INTERACTIVE SCENARIO

The installation has two main operating modes.

  1. Continuous Light Show

In its basic mode, the object glows continuously and plays lighting scenarios inspired by the northern lights:

• turquoise and blue color transitions;
• violet and pink light waves;
• cold white ice-like glow;
• smooth light impulses along the entire length of the composition;
• a “breathing aurora” effect;
• alternation between calm and more dynamic light scenes.

This mode runs continuously and makes the object visually attractive even without visitor interaction.

  1. Touch Response

When a visitor touches a light tube with their hand, an individual light reaction appears at the point of contact.

Possible effects include:

• a light impulse spreading from the touch point;
• a color change directly in the contact area;
• color rising upward through the tube like a stream of energy;
• neighboring tubes gradually picking up the light wave;
• several simultaneous touches creating intersecting and blending streams of light;
• after the reaction ends, the installation smoothly returns to the northern lights mode.

This allows every visitor to launch their own light wave and become part of the overall light performance.

EMOTIONAL EFFECT

The main value of the installation lies in the feeling of personal interaction with the object.

A person does not simply observe the light composition — they become part of it. One touch changes the behavior of the light, creating a sense of magic, warmth, and a living response.

For children, it becomes an engaging game.

For adults, it creates a beautiful emotional moment and a striking object for photos and videos.

For a city, park, waterfront, or commercial space, the installation becomes a powerful point of attraction that holds visitors’ attention, encourages interaction, and stimulates the creation of user-generated content on social media.
