In the modern world, cities are seeking new ways to create unique identity and points of attraction for residents and tourists. Kinetic art is becoming a revolutionary solution that replaces static monuments and sculptures. When representatives of Yakima, Washington approached DION ART STUDIO with a request to create a landmark kinetic installation, we understood that this project would require not only technical expertise—it demanded a deep understanding of the community’s soul.

How City Meanings Create Kinetic Art Objects

Creating meaningful kinetic installations begins with understanding the intersection of place, history, and community identity. Public art must speak the city’s language, reflecting its values and aspirations. For Yakima, we discovered a rich palette of stories: a city born from the vision of a railroad in 1885, transformed from desert to agricultural paradise, and home to diverse cultures that have shaped the Yakima Valley for generations.

The process of creating a kinetic sculpture concept includes several stages:

Cultural Context Research We study the history of the place, its geographical features, economic foundation, and cultural diversity. For Yakima, the key elements were: railroad heritage, agricultural abundance, irrigation systems, and multicultural community.

Finding Symbolic Connections Every element of the future moving installation must have deep symbolic meaning. We search for metaphors that resonate with local audiences while being understandable to visitors.

Technical Embodiment of Meanings A kinetic installation as a city landmark requires not only artistic vision but engineering excellence. Every movement, every lighting effect must amplify the embedded idea.

Detailed Description of Two Concepts in Different Styles

For Yakima, our DION ART STUDIO team developed four different concepts, from which we decided to present the two strongest from our perspective to the client.

"Valley Wings" Concept - Abstract Style

The first concept is executed in abstract style and represents a kinetic installation measuring 26.9′ x 16.8′, consisting of 44 movable aluminum elements with golden coating. This points of attractions for modern cities creates the image of soaring wings over the valley landscape.

INSPIRATION

At the site where a train first stopped in 1885, giving birth to North Yakima, the city has gained wings ready to carry it into the future. “Valley Wings” is the embodiment of the valley’s soul through the movement of light and wind.

WITHIN THE HEART OF YAKIMA

Born from light: Yakima was born from vision—a railroad that connected the desert to the world. Today, the valley’s wings continue this tradition of breakthrough, transforming innovation into art visible for miles around.

Dance of fertility: Every movement of light repeats the eternal rhythm of the valley: seed-sprout-bloom-fruit. Golden rays soar like the aroma of ripening apples, descend like grape leaves, swirl like blossoming cherry petals. This is a symphony of seasons in luminous chords.

Breath of the valley: Winds that shaped this landscape for millennia now conduct the luminous orchestra. Each gust transforms into a new melody of wings—the installation lives with the very breath of the earth.

Beacon of the valley: At night, the installation becomes Yakima’s constellation—a navigational sign for all who seek a place where tradition meets innovation, where the earth births not only harvest but art.

“Valley Wings” doesn’t simply adorn Yakima—it IS Yakima, told in the language of light: a story of perseverance, fertility, and infinite aspiration upward.

PHILOSOPHY

From rails to heavens: Just as the railroad once lifted Yakima from desert to prosperity, the valley’s wings lift the city to new artistic heights. This is the evolution of transportation: from steam engines to the light-speed of dreams.

Choreography of flight: 66 kinetic winches create smooth wave-like movements, imitating bird flight, the swaying of blooming trees in the wind, the dance of grapevines. Programmable scenarios allow the installation to “breathe” in the valley’s rhythm.

Day and night magic: During the day, elements play with sunlight, creating moving shadows and reflections. At night, 10 light cannons transform the wings into a constellation, amazing everyone around.

CULTURAL HERITAGE:

Beacon of the future: The installation becomes a navigational sign for all who seek a place where tradition meets innovation, where railroad history transforms into light art.

"The Five Elements of Yakima" Concept - Symbolic Style

Philosophy: “Where harmony is born from light”

The second kinetic installation is executed in symbolic style and presents 66 kinetic modules in the form of dodecahedrons measuring 17.9′ x 18.4′. Each module embodies five fundamental elements of Yakima:

INSPIRATION:

The pentagon is a symbol of perfection and harmony, where each facet is equal and important. Five-pointed polygons are stars that connect into the constellation of Yakima’s destiny.

FIVE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF YAKIMA:

Generous sun — the source of all life in the valley. Golden rays transform the desert into an oasis of fertility, creating a unique climate where it’s possible to grow the most diverse crops.

Fertile soil — the heart of American agriculture. Earth that births apples, pears, cherries, grapes, hops and vegetables, feeding the entire country.

Water artery — gives life to the desert. The Yakima River and complex irrigation system transformed the arid region into a green paradise, where every drop is worth its weight in gold.

Valley winds — an ancient force that has shaped this landscape for millennia. They carry seeds across the valley, cool hot days, bring change. Wind is the breath of the earth itself, the invisible conductor of nature’s symphony that makes apple leaves dance and grapevines sway.

Yakima community — a melting pot of cultures: Native Americans, European settlers, Latino workers. Different traditions weave together into a unified fabric of community where everyone matters.

UNITY OF FIVE ELEMENTS:

Sun gives energy → to Earth, which absorbs Water → creating fertility → Wind spreads life throughout the valley → Community thrives in harmony with nature → the cycle repeats.

The pentagonal form symbolizes that no element can exist without the others—this is perfect harmony, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

KINETIC ARCHITECTURE:

Geometric concept: The installation consists of 66 kinetic modules, each representing a dodecahedron—a regular polyhedron with 12 pentagonal faces. This sacred geometry embodies the five elements of Yakima in each face, creating a three-dimensional star of perfect harmony.

Form symbolism: The golden coating of modules radiates warm light, symbolizing the generous sun of the valley and the full spectrum of life energy. Artistic perforation of each module creates patterns of light, transforming functional openings into poetic messages.

Collective metaphor: 66 modules represent the diversity of Yakima’s community—each unique, but together they create a unified constellation. Various movement configurations symbolize the richness of cultures and nations living in the valley.

PHILOSOPHY:

Natural interactivity: The installation uses wind as a natural activator, allowing nature to control the activation and deactivation of light effects. This creates a living dialogue between art and environment.

Choreography of light: Each module moves in an individual rhythm, creating wave-like patterns and complex geometric forms. Together they perform the “Dance of Five Elements of Yakima”—an infinitely changing symphony of movement and light.

CULTURAL HERITAGE:

Souvenir program: An individual module can become a unique city souvenir—a miniature embodiment of the installation, combining Yakima’s rich history with contemporary art.

How Kinetic Installation Embodies Meanings

Kinetic art possesses a unique ability to transform abstract concepts into living, breathing forms. Unlike static monuments, kinetic installations create:

Emotional Impact Movement attracts attention and creates emotional connection with the observer. Each element of our kinetic sculpture tells a story through movement.

Environmental Interactivity Using wind and light sensors allows the installation to react to natural conditions, creating unique performances every day.

Multi-level Perception A kinetic installation as a city landmark works on different perception levels:

  • Daytime: play of light and shadow, reflections, moving patterns
  • Nighttime: dramatic lighting transforms the installation into a light show
  • Seasonal changes: different movement programs for different times of year

Cultural Heritage Public art should become part of the city’s cultural DNA. Our projects create new traditions and rituals, meeting places and spaces for reflection.

Economic Impact Points of attractions for modern cities generate tourist flow, create unique photo zones, and contribute to the development of surrounding areas.
